SCREAMING BATFISH #3

SCREAMING BATFISH BLUES #3

JUICE
NEW RICHLAND
His parents were as dead as Lincoln’s dick. Dad, literally. Mom, figuratively.

As dead as Chief Petty Officer (Retired) Jerome Wyatt. Who by the way had been born and raised but an hours drive south of his killer’s hometown in Mason City, Iowa. Talk about coincidences or a quirky fate.

New Richland, Minnesota had been a great town to grow up in. Less than two thousand for a population, it was a farming community set amongst the cornfields of southern Minnesota. Football games on Friday nights, church socials, summer carnivals, Mom and apple pie, all that happy horseshit.

Mohawk had a given name at that time. Long before he was given a new one by his government, his Christian name in those days was Jacob “Jake” Morrow.

His parents were Rick and Sandy Morrow and they had lived their entire lives within ten miles of New Richland, with the exception of the four years that Rick had served in the army. Rick had been an employee of the local grain elevator while Sandy had been a stay at home Mom.

When Rick returned from his stint with the army in Korea, he returned a different man. Something he had seen or done over there had gone horribly wrong, but he never would talk about it. To anyone. Not even
about all the medals he kept in a cigar box on top of his stroke books in his sock drawer. Gone was the church going honor roll student that everyone had been so proud of. In his place was a bitter, violent, hard drinking, and at times, whore chasing individual.

He was quick to anger and start to throwing fists, especially after a night with the bottle.

He and Sandy had married prior to Rick shipping out for Korea. She had gotten pregnant almost immediately after his return and they settled into a small house just
off the small downtown area of New Richland.

It was not a marriage made in heaven. After work, Rick enjoyed drinking with his buddies at the local tavern which had once been the towns bank, and on the weekends he got totally blasted while either watching the
Twins, North Stars, or the Vikings in action on television, depending on what sport was in season.

He also liked to hunt and fish, also while intoxicated. He was a rugged man’s man and even though he was incredibly obnoxious when drinking, he had no problem scoring with the town’s single and sometimes married women.

Sandy enjoyed staying at home and watching her soap operas while stuffing huge amounts of candy, cake, pudding, or any other sweet into her mouth. Along with her normal pregnancy weight gain she became enormous.

Things changed a little for the better after little Jake was born. Rick absolutely loved the little guy and had big dreams for his son. Being a complete Minnesota Viking maniac who drove a classic 65 Ford Mustang
painted Viking purple with the Viking horns decal in the rear window, Rick naturally wanted his son to grow up to become a member of the Minnesota Viking football club. He became obsessed with it. The first toy put in Jake’s crib was an official NFL “Duke” football.

Rick threw himself hog wild into the upbringing and molding of his son. He taught Jake to catch a full size football by the time he was four and had him running wind sprints in the back yard by the time he was seven. He was playing in the Pee Wee leagues by the next year and on his tenth birthday Rick bought him a sand filled weight set so he could start bulking him up.

Rich himself gave up drinking after work and only got wasted on the weekends while watching his games on TV. Not all of this was voluntary. He had been banished from attending the entire season of Jake’s second year of Pee Wee football after showing up blotto and calling a referee (who was also a local minister) a "blind as a bat cocksucker.”

He also had given up chasing women after narrowly avoiding being shot while dallying with a local married woman. Her husband had come home unexpectedly after leaving to go bowling in Waseca, he had forgotten his bowling glove, only to see his wife taking it from behind while leaning
against the kitchen table that his parents had given them for a wedding present.

He had rushed into the living room to grab his 12 gauge, which gave Rick the moment he needed to jump buck naked through a plate glass window. The enraged husband still took a wild shot at the fleeing Rick but succeeded in only killing seven of his neighbor’s homing pigeons nesting in their coop.

Rick now had a steady single piece, a truck stop waitress who lived over in Geneva. That was safer.

Sandy was by now a virtual shut in and weighed close to what a starting lineman would hit the scales at. It wouldn’t take much longer before she could be the subject of an article in the National Enquirer.
By the eighth grade, Jake had settled into his position as a defensive back on the junior high team. Along with the weight routine his father had him on (the family’s basement now had almost as much iron as the high school gym), three protein shakes a day, and his mother’s gigantic home cooked meals, Jake was now as big and buff as some college ballplayers.

And the boy could hit like a fucking mule kicks. He starched two wide receivers from Glenville in the first quarter of their game. One with a severe concussion. He had a natural instinct to go towards where the ball was being thrown. Interceptions didn’t matter to him. Only pure contact. A
hit was only good to him if snot flew out of both of their noses.

He didn’tcare if the receiver held onto the ball, if he fumbled, or even if his own bell got rang. He just wanted to hit. By his freshman year he was playing on the high school “A” squad and banging a cheerleader who was in her senior year. He didn’t bother to study; he had people doing his homework assignments for him.

Rick thought he was shitting in tall cotton he was so proud. After Jake was ejected in the game against Conger for clothes lining a running back who was stupid enough to run into Jake’s zone on a draw play, Rick went
out and bought Jake a copy of Jack Tatum’s They Call Me Assassin.

His pre-game meal was two chicken breasts, a baked potato, a small side of spaghetti with tomato sauce, and after an hour or two of digestion, five white cross and three cups of coffee. Just like the pros.

Although Rick loved his liquor and beer, he had no time or patience for people who used recreational drugs. By recreational he meant marijuana, acid, heroin, or coke. Speed did not fit in this category. Speed wasn’t a drug to Rick. It was just something that kept you awake so you could drink more beer or helped you get through the work day, or something that you gave to your teenage son before a big football game.

That other shit was for hippies and other degenerates. Rick had no problems getting his hands on any zip anytime he wanted it. His little brother Billy, was the biggest methamphetamine, pot, and Quaalude dealer in the county.

Billy was a veteran too. Vietnam. Three tours. All in a row. He would have stayed for another tour if it hadn’t been for the cobra that had bit him on his left hand causing him the loss of three of his fingers. He had been pillaging a Buddhist temple at the time for souvenirs and the little bastard had been coiled up and sleeping behind a shrine when Billy had disturbed him by dropping a religious statue on his tail. He could have
easily died but a chopper was already on its way to his platoon’s camp to chopper out a soldier who just had his testicles blown off by a bouncing betty.

He still spent over a month in a hospital in Saigon before being returned stateside. It was there that began his lifelong affair with pharmaceuticals.

Billy had loved Vietnam. You could do whatever you wanted over there. You could drink, do great drugs, screw all the women you wanted, and on top of it all, kill people. And no one could do a thing about it. Not that anyone cared anyway. It all had given him an incredible rush of power and a feeling of invincibility. He called it the “Juice.”

On the freedom flight home he had wept while everyone else had cheered hysterically when the pilot had announced that they were out of Vietnam air space. The stewardess had patted his shoulder affectionately. She thought he was weeping for joy.

After returning to New Richland, he had worked for a while at the corn cannery in Waseca to supplement his VA disability check, but soon found the monotony of a day to day job to be unbearable. Dealing drugs
was much more fun and profitable.

Soon he had bankrolled enough cash to buy a beautiful brand spanking new Harley-Davidson and was running with a biker gang out of Albert Lea called The Grim Reapers.

He was forced to take year and a day vacation in Stillwater State Prison for possession with intent to distribute, but his gorgeous wheel chair bound wife, Dawn, had ran the business for him while he was away. She was a natural with numbers and investing, and soon they owned a small farm, a four wheel
drive pickup, the previously purchased Harley, and a Winnebago motor
home which was specially equipped with an electric lift to get Dawn in and
out of.

She had had no problems dealing with the scrotum heads that they supplied their crank and downers to while he was away. Underneath the Mexican blanket she sat on was a chrome plate .357 magnum and after she had shot the dumb shit in the ass who had tried to walk out the door without paying for his gram of speed, word had gotten around fast.

It hadn’t taken Billy’s fellow Reapers long to find out where the guy that was walking
around with a .357 slug in his rectum lived and they had paid him a friendly visit by shining their boots on his rib cage.

Dawn was a tough nut. Billy had met her when she was dancing with a carnival strip show called Chez Paree at the Freeborn County fair in Albert Lea. Billy had gone to see the sprint car races that were held on the final night of the fair on its half mile horse track.

The track was not maintained at all during the course of the year and for the drivers it was almost suicidal to compete on it. But it drew enormous crowds who came to see if they might luck out and witness someone get killed, so their racing association booked them for the fair on an annual basis. After the races Billy had gone to the beer garden and had gotten incredibly wasted snorting crystal meth washed down with Grain Belt beer. It was his desire for a corndog smothered in mustard that drew Billy to the midway and to Dawn.

They had brought the girls out on stage to pump up the audience for the final show of the night. When Billy saw her up on the stage shaking her money maker and grinding away, he had forgotten the corndog and had paid his six bucks to see the show. It had long been a custom for the girls of Chez Paree to get totally naked for the last show of the night, even though in Freeborn County the rule was g-strings and pasties at all times.

Not to worry though since the local sheriff’s department had already been paid off.

Getting naked for the last set really got the local farm boys and packing plant workers all fired up and it was easy to talk them into the twenty five dollar blow jobs, even though they had to wear a rubber, that the girls gave after the show out in the trailers behind the tent.

Billy gladly paid the cash for a hummer from Dawn and after she got a taste of the dope he was carrying and saw the wad of cash in his pocket, it hadn’t taken him much to convince her to shitcan the glamour of the stage and to take off with him. Plus, he was a good friend of the owner of the local strip club, The Aragon, so she would never be lacking for employment.

The carny boss of Chez Paree was a little pissed when Dawn gave her ten second notice but was calmed down by a fifty, a gram of crystal, and the sight of Billy’s .38 Colt Detective Special stuck in his belt.

They were married a week later and while Billy dealt drugs, Dawn flashed her jugs (covered in pasties) to the local idiots of Albert Lea. It was easy work for her. Her own father had turned her into a prostitute at the age of thirteen by charging his drunken buddies for her and at eighteen she had
taken off with the show when it passed through Cairo, Illinois.

Billy treated her like a goddess and she only danced because she wanted to help contribute to their dream of living somewhere on the beach. After Vietnam, Billy couldn’t seem to handle the cold of Minnesota.

On a snowy Saturday night at the club she had unknowingly gotten the wife of a customer convinced that her husband was interested in more than just watching her dance. As Dawn had gathered up her clothes after her set and stepped down off the stage, the woman had come up from behind and stabbed her in the back with the sharpened end of a rat tail comb.

Dawn had been confined to a wheel chair ever since then. The woman assailant had been sentenced to fifteen years in Shakopee State Prison. Her husband meanwhile, was shot eight times and killed when he
was walking out the back door of a bar in Albert Lea called The Name Of The Game, almost a year to the day later. Billy was questioned for over ten hours but had an ironclad alibi. The murder case was kept open for years.

THE COST OF BEER AND BARFING AT THE SUPER BOWL

THE COST OF BEER AND BARFING AT THE
SUPERBOWL

Growing up in Minnesota I have personal experience & knowledge about the amount of boozing that goes on in that State. Next to the Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament, drinking is the most popular thing going on in the frozen tundra of the Great White North. Winter or Summer.

So naturally I was curious about what the cost of a beer would be at the Superbowl which is being held today in  Minnesota's temple of the Vikings - which the Vikings actually had a chance to play in if you put aside the fact that the Eagles kicked the holy shit out of them two weeks ago and in the process making them look like a second rate Arena League squad.

On the web I couldn't pin down the exact cost but the estimates seemed to be $12 for a small shit beer - Budweiser product - or a premium beer - they're probably considering Leinenkugel as a premium beer - for $14. That doesn't include the plastic cup "souvenir beer" which will probably run you around $18.

Being an ex-sailor and ex-drunk, I then thought about how much beer the average drunk is going to put away before they puke it all up - either at the stadium or out in the parking lot after the game in 0 degree weather. That's a lot of cash firing out of your gut either down the toilet or freezing on the sidewalk. Or even worse....

...down the head, neck, and back of the person sitting in front of you who just bought their ticket this morning on StubHub for $5000. Which most likely would turn into a massive brawl with eviction from the game and possible arrest!

Which led me to think of my most memorable barfing incident. And like I said - being a sailor and a one time drunk I have hurled many a time.

But being it is SuperBowl Sunday and it is being played in my home state - the home of the Coen brothers, Jesse Ventura, The Trashmen (Surfin' Bird), Scott LeDoux (boxer), Bob Dylan, Judy Garland, pervert Garrison Keillor,  16 time world wrestling champion Verne Gagne who in the throes of dementia body-slammed another resident - killing him in the process - at the care facility he was living at, and many other dignitaries...I decided to share my own personal GREATEST PUKING INCIDENT of my life...but the incident had to be one of the times I yakked in Minnesota...since I've vomited from Hawaii to Amsterdam.

No problem. Since my greatest kneeling before the porcelain princess story, did in fact, happen in Minnesota.

The #3 greatest upchuck was while I was in the Navy and my ship, the USS Dixie AD-14, was in the yards in Long Beach. The night before I had gotten totally shithoused smoking hash oil and drinking copious amounts of Olde English 800. Nursing a hangover that could kill a horse I almost made it through the work day without incident - even while I was in a porta john which was up on the main deck, taking a leak, and two deck apes started to push it back and forth, and shit/piss and that blue crap was sloshing all over inside. Somehow I kept it all down. But near the end of the day I was nursing a Coke and looking down at the water and saw this huge turd floating in the harbor. Back then when you flushed a toilet on a ship it pumped straight into the surrounding waters. Of all sudden, a huge sea gull dropped down into the water right next to the turd and happily gulped it down while giving a gull screech of appreciation. That was it for me! What little I had in my stomach - a microwave burrito and a Almond Joy - became the dessert for the seagull.

#2 was also while I was in the Navy in Long Beach. I was living in Savannah Navy housing in Long Beach which was part of the ghetto off of Santa Fe & PCH. A buddy of mine and I were getting high and drinking vodka. When we ran out of vodka we decided to to stroll over to Santa Fe to Anchor Liquor & pick up another jug. On the way back as we staggered down the sidewalk, we were hitting the vodka straight out of the jug and I could suddenly feel it all ready to blow! We must have been really loud because this Navy wife opened her front door and told us to "shut the fuck up because we were keeping her kids awake". I responded by calmly walking over to her car and puking all over the hood of her car and then turned and screamed at her to "Get the fuck back in the house"! Which she did! Probably to call the Shore Patrol. That taught her for trying to ruin our good clean wholesome fun! What ever happened to support the troops anyway?

But #1 - the all time personal alcohol induced vomit story happened the night before the Super Bowl when I was home on leave in Minnesota. This guy was throwing a huge bash in his apartment which was on on top of this bar in Alden, Minnesota,  a tiny town just outside of Albert Lea (my hometown which isn't a whole hell of a lot bigger). The bar owner was there so every time a keg went dry he'd just pop downstairs and grab another. There was a shitload of bikers there and they had mixed up this punch in a 50 gallon trash can. At the time when I was drinking the punch I had no idea what was in it, but it gave you this incredible urge to drink more and more of it. Finally, after it ran out, you could see a white residue in the bottom of the can and one of the bikers told me that they had mixed over 200 hits of speed in it!

After that, everybody, while talking the speed of sound, started to hammer down the beer, and I drank so much that I felt that if I poured anymore down my throat it would run out of my mouth. Since the party was just starting to roll, I decided the best thing was to discretely sneak out the door and barf in the back alley - giving me more room in my gut so I could drink more. I walked out on to the back outdoor steps but the urge to barf was so intense so I simply hung my head over the railing and let go!

It had to easily have been 30 degrees below zero without the wind chill and the geyser of puke (the relief was was so great it just felt wonderful - I could have done it all over again it felt so good) cascaded down on to the windshield of the car below me - freezing instantly! I then returned to the party which went on until the sun came up. I woke up that evening with a hangover so severe I thought that I may have had a stroke! I can't imagine what it was like scraping that windshield that SuperBowl morning.

I've got a feeling that tonight after the SuperBowl (because this is Minnesota, home of the some of the greatest alcoholics in history) - whether it's the Patriots or the Eagles that's crowned the World Champions - that someone is going to have to scrape some nachos and hot dogs off of their windshield.

$18 dollars for a beer or not!

***And remember Uber charges anywhere from $25 to $150 to clean puke up in their cars.***

SHIT FOR BRAINS ON ICE IN ALBERT LEA

SHIT FOR BRAINS ON ICE IN
ALBERT LEA, MINNESOTA

Every small town has THAT family! The family that's always in the newspapers - usually in the police blotter section - for some havoc that they're causing or is suspected of causing.

Albert Lea, Minnesota - where I grew up - had more than one of those families but the Krumb family (I changed their last name just in case one of them is still alive & in the off chance reads this and decides to put a bullet in the back of my head and bury me in a shallow grave) was numero uno in that department.

I never heard anything about Mrs. Krumb. Whether she had skipped town, was chained up inside the house, or had been offed and sunk in a barrel in Fountain Lake for burning the eggs.

But Old Man Krumb and his sons? Everyone in town knew about them. Stealing cars, dealing dope, or poaching deer - one them or several them were always spending some time in Stillwater prison. It was like a vacation home for them.

But it was the Old Man who really put the family on the map.

Every year, the local country club put a car on the ice on Fountain Lake. Then, for five bucks or so, you could guess the date and time it finally fell through the ice when Spring hit and the lake thawed. The closest ticket to the actual time/date would then win all the cash. Pretty common contest in Minnesota, a part of the country where the State hobby is drinking and throwing up on cars.

Well, Old Man Krumb decided that it would be a hoot if he went out there in the middle of the night and blew a hole in the ice and put the car to the bottom of the lake months early (I don't know if he had bought one of the tickets and thought that he could win the cash that way or not - I doubt even he was that stupid but you never know).

There were no witnesses to the final incident but the results were that Old Man Krumb obviously didn't know shit about explosives.

Dynamite "explodes," it doesn't "implode" and so what I imagine what happened was the Old Man simply stuck a shitload of dynamite under the car rather than boring a hole in the ice and sticking the TNT in the hole. But I'm just guessing.

Either way, Krumb lit the dynamite, and stepped back (not far enough) and stood there with his thumb up his ass to watch the fireworks.

When the TNT went off,  not only did the car get blown to pieces, but so did Old Man Krumb! Pieces of him were scattered all about the ice.

When the cops and the ambulance crew arrived to review the carnage and "investigate" the case - local legend has that the Krumb was being picked up in pieces and dropped into large plastic bags since obviously, there was no need for a stretcher. The head of the ambulance crew (which was privately run at the time), an extremely overweight dude who would later drop a ton of weight on some radical diet and then promptly drop dead from a heart attack - supposedly found Krumb's intact brain chilling on the frozen tundra.

Holding it high in the air he had laughingly yelled out, "Does anybody needs some brains? This fucking one has never been used!"

BUGHOUSE TALES #2 SEARCHING FOR DAN'S EYE

BUGHOUSE TALES #2

SEARCHING FOR DAN'S EYE

I was making my first round on the unit when Dan (the one eyed Indian) approached me. You never knew what shit he was going to babble and I was getting ready to blow him off since I had more pressing things to attend to.

"I want to get my eye back!" He blurted out as he walked up to me.

"What the fuck are you talking about, Dan?" I responded. "I don't think you're eligible for an eye transplant." Hell, I didn't even know if there are such things as an eye transplant - other than the Tom Cruise flick Minority Report , I had given the matter zero thought.

And even if it was possible I seriously doubted that an incarcerated inmate in the Minnesota Security Hospital would be considered for such a complex surgery. Especially since he had gouged his own eye out!

"Have you ever been to Duluth?" He asked.

Shit, this conversation was going nowhere.

"Yes, Dan. I used to live in Duluth." My mind was wandering to my first morning cup of coffee and if there was a chocolate doughnut still left in the Dunkin' Donuts box in the security bubble.

"Do you know where Last Place On Earth is."

"You mean the head shop on Superior Street? Of course." Last Place was probably the most famous head shop in Northern Minnesota.

"I pawned my glass eye right across the street from there."

Shit! There was a pawn shop right across the street from there. This conversation was starting to get interesting even though it was all probably delusional bullshit on his part.

I looked at my watch, it was only 0630 in the morning. "I tell you what, Dan. They probably don't open until around 10, I'll give them a call then and see if they still have it." It'd give me something fun to do.

Without another word, he wandered over to the breakfast cart to get another cup of defaf - caffeine was a prohibited substance since it interfered with the cocktail of medications all the patients were on. The conversation over, he probably had more pressing matters to attend to, one of which wasn't taking a shower. Dan had a constant horrible and pungent odor and I was always having to field complaints about Dan not bathing or washing his clothes.

Promptly at 10 I called information and got the phone number for the pawn shop.

To my astonishment the guy who answered the phone knew immediately what I was talking about. "Yea! This crazy fucking Indian came in and pawned it for 25 bucks. I have it here on the counter for a conversation piece. Man, that motherfucker was drunk as hell! He had a bottle of Thunderbird in his jacket pocket."

I told him that the eye was state property and I'd have Dan's social worker give him a call about cutting him a check.

When his social worker called, he told her he didn't really give a shit if it was state property or not. He was running a business and he wanted 50 bucks for it! They finally negotiated it down to $40 and he'd pay for shipping.

When the eye showed up, Dan promptly popped it in and strutted around the unit like a cocky rooster, showing his eyeball off to both staff and patients.

I didn't know that you had to lube up the eye with some Vaseline or some other lubricant or your eyelid would stick to it, which of course, Dan totally ignored. So his eyelid was always stuck in the half blink position.

On top of it, the state looked like they had cheaply bought the fucking thing from a taxidermist. It looked like the glass eye that you'd use when you mounted a deer head.

The overall effect was hideous!

But totally appropriate for the atmosphere.
